Cooks For A Cause Live Marathon Raises RM10,000 For Flood Relief

On Sunday 2 January 2022, Masters of Malaysian Cuisine ran an 8-hour marathon Live broadcast during which our chefs and guests took turns to show our audience how to cook some of their favourite Malaysian dishes.

The aim of the event was to help raise funds to support the flood relief efforts by YouthCare Malaysia (YCM) in partnership with Yunus Social Business Centre @ Sunway Education Group (YSBC@SEG).

All of this first came about when Germany-based MOMC@Heart cook Leeza Yeo called me the week before and suggested we did something to help victims of the devastating floods in Malaysia. MOMC Chef Debbie Teoh took the initiative to get the Sunway Education Group on board as our partner.

In the space of a few short days, our chefs in 7 countries rallied together and volunteered time out of their busy year-end schedule to take part in this event. Malaysian diplomats around the world delivered words of encouragement either via pre-recorded messages or live during the broadcast.

Dato’ Haslina Abdul Hamid, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries of Malaysia (MAFI), graciously joined me Live On Air to give our viewers an insight into what the Malaysian government and MAFI are doing to assist those affected by the floods.

Malaysian businesses in Australia and Europe stepped up to the plate by donating despite these tough Covid times. These included –

  • My Blue Tea, a producer and distributor of Malaysian plant extracts including blue butterfly flower powder and pandan powder
  • Uncle Jim of Jim’s Malaysia, a chain of Malaysian food outlets founded in Sydney
  • Germany-based importer and distributor of Malaysian food products, Mal-Asia.
  • Sudee, producer and distributor of a range of dry cooking pastes made in Malaysia

I’m grateful to announce that the total raised through our Cooks For A Cause event has now reached RM10,000 including direct, private donations.

Right now, I’m busy collating the recipes from all the chefs’ cooking demonstrations and they will be published in an upcoming special issue of our MOMC eMagazine, which you can get for free just by being on our email list

If you haven’t already donated, you can do so at bit.ly/momc-charity before we close off the GoFundMe. All the donor names (except those who chose to remain anonymous) will be listed in our eMagazine.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in supporting this event – the donors, the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries, the Agriculture Counsellor Office in Sydney and in The Hague, the Malaysian Consulate of Sydney, Education Malaysia Australia, the Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest, the Embassy of Malaysia in The Hague, our chefs both old and new, the Sunway Education Group, our broadcast partners Apa Kau Rasa, and, of course, the more than 14,000 people who tuned in during our broadcast.

Broadcast tech used in this event was a Lenovo Legion 7 laptop; thank you to Lenovo for the technology that allows me to produce all the content for Masters of Malaysian Cuisine.
