Kedah – Street Food Journeys: Malaysia Episode 7
I had a couple of opportunities to visit Langkawi Island (which is a part of Kedah) in the past, but never took them up. This meant that I knew very little about this northern Malaysian state before we started production on this episode, beyond the fact that it’s known as the “rice bowl of Malaysia” because of its vast paddy fields. I put a callout for contributors for our segment on “what dishes do you think of when you think of” and our community responded heartily, so much so I coudn’t fit them all into our poster. Among the contributors are international Malaysian diplomats Khairul Tazril, the Chargé d’Affaires to Serbia, and Kartini Tajul, the Education Attaché at the Consulate of Sydney. Chef Dato’ Ismail Ahmad, ever his cheeky self, made a grand entrance before sitting down to answer the question for our viewers.

Kedah-born MasterChef Malaysia judge Johari Edrus makes its most famous dish – Bihun Sup Utara (literally, northern vermicelli soup), whilst I attempted Roti Canai Sarang Burung (bird’s nest roti canai) – recipes for both of these will be sent out to everyone who signed up to our email list – MalaysianChefs.com/StreetFoodJourneys – and they’ll also be published in our next eMagazine.
Keep your eyes peeled for The JetLag Warriors’ and Ken Abroad’s segments – and see if you can spot any familiar faces in their respective videos. Finally, my immense thanks to our community – Salsabila Abbas (and her adorable Nawal), Syed Wafa, Fadhillah Ariffin – and of course, our MOMC chefs Rene Juefri and Bob Adnin and MOMC@Heart’s Sue Ann Ooi.
